Before you use the below procedures you need to first understand the convergence options on Hitachi projection sets.

Magic Focus - This is an automatic convergence correction feature that some Hitachi models have built in. You simply press the button and the TV will attempt to realign the colors. If it fails to do so your TV likely has a convergence failure and needs to be repaired. If a repair was done and it still fails to correct the alignment try manually correcting the convergence in DCAM using the method below.

Convergence Menu - On some Hitachi TV sets you will see a convergence option under the setup menus. If that option exists try using it first.  If for any reason you can't move the RED and Blue cross hairs in all directions - UP/DOWN - LEFT/RIGHT you need to first repair the convergence before proceeding.   Please check out store for a kit!

DCAM Mode -  If the magic focus button does not correct the alignment or if your setup menu does not have a convergence option you will need adjust in DCAM mode instead.

Note: Always start in the center of the screen and work you way out in a circular pattern until you get to the outer part of the screen. Then start over in the center again. Only make minor adjustments to each square. Do not try to adjust them all the way unless they are very close. Its better to make several passes instead.

MAGIC FOCUS METHOD DETAILS

To correct abnormal convergence, turn off the television and allow for cool down, approximately 30 seconds.

Next turn on the television again, and allow the TV to warm up for 20 minutes. If after pressing MAGIC FOCUS button your TV still has abnormal convergence follow the below procedure to access the Digital Convergence Adjustment Mode (DCAM).  then first attempt to correct by reading old ROM data into memory.

PROCEDURE FOR DP14G AND DP15 CHASSIS:

Hook up the cables so that your TV displays video. (Set is in Normal mode.)

DCAM Button

If your TV does not have a magic focus feature or if you still can't get into DCAM using the methods described above try this procedure.

One some hitachi TV sets there is a small button located on the front of the convergence board. This is the side that faces the front of the TV. Its very hard to see from the BACK of the TV.

(1) Hook up the cables so that your TV displays video. (Set is in Normal mode.)

1) Power on the TV.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT HOLD THE BUTTON DOWN WHILE POWERING ON THE TV! REPEAT - DO NOT  HOLD THE BUTTON DOWN WHILE POWERING ON THE TV. If you do so you will erase all stored data and spend dozens of hours trying to reset convergence.

2) Remove the front panel of the TV to access the button. With the TV powered on press and hold the button until you see the convergence grid appear.

Button is on the convergence board facing the front of theTV.

Remove the front panel/speaker panel - to access the button. Or reach around the TV and press it from the back.

3. The unit will now be in the DCAM Mode

GOTO  Adjusting Convergence section below!!!

Adjusting Convergence

Now that you are in DCAM you will need to adjust the convergence...

1) First - Lets try to read the original values stored in the TV set.

  • Press the SWAP button twice to read old ROM data into memory.
  • ?READ FROM ROM?? will display on the OSD after the first press of the SWAP button.

2) Proceed with digital convergence adjustments ONLY if READ FROM ROM did not clear up the convergence error.

3) On the screen you will see the convergence grid. The goal is to re-align all the colors behind the each other. Green is the master grid and typicaly should not be adjusted if its straight.

USING THE REMOTE CONTROLL TO ADJUST THE GRID

Now that you ready to adjust the convergence you need to know how to move around the grid.

Use the following information

Pressing the remote button....

“STATUS or Info”  = Selects Green

“0” = Selects  Red

“ANT or Input" =  Selects Blue

Pressing the remote button....

Use 4, 6, 2, and 5 to move the cursor position (dotted lines).

Pressing the remote button...

Thumb stick/Arrows  up/down/left/right  = will adjust the lines in that direction.

Three adjustment modes/sizes are available:

(3x3) Press “STATUS” 5 times

(7x5) Press “0” 5 times

(13x9) Press “ANT” 5 times

For touch-up, only the (13x9) mode is necessary. This will adjust every cross-hatch intersection point on the screen.

For complete adjustment, start with (3x3) mode. This will adjust center point and eight edge points only, but will greatly reduce adjustment time.

Then use (7x5) mode, and finally (13x9) mode to finish convergence.

If “S” distortion appears between cross-hatch lines or if you are having a hard time getting the convergence to align try the (3x3) mode again  then repeat (7x5) mode to remove distortion, then return to (13x9) mode to finish touch-up convergence.

To confirm and fine tune the convergence at the edge of the screen, press the PIP CH button on
the remote control while in the digital convergence adjustment mode (DCAM) for additional lines at the edge of the screen. Fine tune the edge convergence as necessary. To exit, press PIP CH again.

Example:

Lets adjust the blue color!!!

First - We select the blue color by pressing the "ANT or Input key on the remote"

1) Start adjustment at the center of the screen.

2) Cursor over to the next position by pressing either the 4, 6, 2, and 5 to move the cursor position (dotted lines).

(3) Adjust center area first, ending with edge sections. Use the thumbstick/arrows to adjust the blue line in the correct direction. In this case we need to move it up to match the grid!

(4) Press INFO button to perform calculation operation.

This process will take about 2 seconds and no
picture will be seen at this time.

5) After interpolation, check convergence again and
repeat (1)-(5) if necessary.

(6) When convergence is acceptable, press PIP MODE
to write data to ROM memory. ROM WRITE? is
displayed to alarm system that ROM will be
overwritten with new data. Press the PIP MODE
button again to write displayed data to ROM.

(7) DATA WRITE TO ROM will take approximately 4
seconds and no picture will be displayed.

(8) Green dots will be displayed when operation is
completed.

(9) Press MUTE to return to convergence pattern, then
confirm again convergence is acceptable.

(10) Press PIP MODE (ROM WRITE) mode, then press
PIP CH to initialize sensor data positions.

If you are having a hard time getting them aligned try swithching modes...

Three adjustment modes are available:

(3x3) Press “STATUS” 5 times

(7x5) Press “0” 5 times

(13x9) Press “ANT” 5 times

Saving the new Convergence Settings

Remember to save the correction data. To save the correction data, press the PIP MODE or Move button twice. ?WRITE TO PTV 2 of 2 PTV 01-10 ROM?? will display on the OSD after the first press of the PIP MODE button or Move Button.

After the second press of the PIP MODE button or Move Button, the screen will go dark for approximately 20 seconds. When the data has been saved, or ROM WRITE has been completed, green dots will appear on the OSD corresponding to the 13 x 9 crosshatch intersection adjustment points.

After the green dots appear, press the MUTE button to return to the DCAM.

Note: The above procedure may not work on all models. If that is the case  press the power button on the front of the TV.

Magic Foucs Fix

Magic Focus Initialize - Adjustment Preparation

(1) Hook up the cables so that your TV displays video. (Set is in Normal mode.)
(2) Digital convergence adjustment should have been completed above.
(3) Set is in DCU adjustment mode.

Adjustment Procedure

(1) Press PIP MODE and then PIP CH to initialize Magic Focus. The initialize operation starts and several windows appear during this operation. It takes about 30 seconds or less.
(2) When green dots appear, initialize operation is finished.
(3) Turn power OFF.

Another way to start the initialize operation:
(1) Press SERVICE ONLY Sw. on CONVER/FOCUS PWB to set DCU adj. mode.
(2) Press [PIP MODE] key on R/C. Then ROM WRITE? is displayed for alarm. Next, press [PIP

Disclaimer - enter the DCAM mode at your own risk. If you "screw up" in here, you can have big problems requiring a service visit from a technician. Review the instructions carefully before you start. Some newer TV/Remotes do not have the appropriate buttons. I found this information "elsewhere" but have used it myself.

People with newer Hitachis can do a 117 point "user convergence" in the user menu. Instructions are provided in the operating manual right after the section on Magic Focus.

I have used the following instructions to do a "DCAM" convergence several times. It works great if you know how to follow instructions.

Read carefully first before trying. Also, I've found it best to start in the "medium" 5 x 7 grid first - get the convergence good there and then go to the 9 x 13. If you start in the 9 x 13, you can waste an hour getting it almost perfect and then have an "S" curve happen on one of the last few points, so you have to go to the "medium" adjustment just to fix it... and then redo much of the 9 x 13.

I work from the center out...

Here are the instructions for how to do a DCAM convergence. You don't have to open the TV to do it. This is a different mode than the service menu. These instructions are mostly from the service manual with some added comments from a poster on the avs forum.

Manual Convergence for the Hitachi
1) Receive an NTSC signal.
2) Press Magic Focus to begin magic focus
3) Press magic focus again during the magic focus process to get the "stop" screen
4) While stop screen is up, press STATUS or INFO on the remote control (R/C) to bring you to DCAM mode and
the service grid
5) When you first get in here? I believe red is the selected color by default (it is flashing).
6) To choose other colors to converge, use the following buttons on the R/C:
a) "STATUS" - Green
b) "0" - Red
c) "ANT" - Blue
7) Start from the center of the screen and work your way out on one color at a time. I adjusted red across the
whole screen to match green. Then I switched to blue, and adjusted that to green as well. After you adjust blue, you
may want to go back and adjust some red again? etc. until the convergence looks good.
(a) Use 4, 6, 2, and 5 on the R/C to move the cursor position(dotted lines).
(b) Use thumb stick to move the convergence point color.
** There have been other posts in here to tape together the color filters found in the Avia DVD to help converge
lines more easily. I have used this method, and it works well for adjusting to a greater detail. Basically, you put the
red filter next to the green and adjust your red to the green line both horizontally, and then vertically. Then you do
the same with the blue next to the green. Some people recommended you should be at normal viewing distance. I
did mine from just a few feet back from the set. Maybe my eyes aren?t as good? maybe I just felt like it worked
better this way. There are some other posts also recommending using binoculars. I think it?s great that people
suggest things to make the process easier? but my girlfriend would think I was insane if she saw me with
binoculars on the couch adjusting the convergence. I don?t know? whatever works best I guess.
8 ) I did not adjust the green at all. I use the green as the guide and did not adjust the location of any green point.
This is highly suggested unless you have geometry problems.
9) When going along the lines and adjusting, you may run into the problem of getting an "S" curve on the line.
You?ll know if you get there. Basically, no matter what you do to adjust the line to be converged, the middle of the
line between the points will not straighten out (it bends between the points). To fix this, the manual recommends
going to the (7x5) mode which gives you less points to adjust. I had this problem, and the solution worked. There is
also another mode (3x3) which gives you even less points. Basically, if the set looks good, you only fine tune it in
(13x9) mode. If you have serious problems, the grids work as:
3x3 - "coarse"
7x5 - "medium"
13x9 - "fine"
10) To get to each of these patterns use the following on the R/C: (only if you need to)
1. (3x3) Press "STATUS" 5 times (only works when DCU is in uncorrected state)
2. (7x5) Press "0" 5 times
3. (13x9) Press "ANT" 5 times

Note: The grid size doesn't change, but the cursor "skips" a line.

11) If you adjust the 3x3, then you should go to the 7x5, and then the 13x9. You get the point? depending on where
you start, work your way up, and always finish on the 13x9
12) When finishing up the 13x9 mode, to get additional ?grids? on the edges of the screen, press the PIP CH button
on the remote control while in the digital convergence adjustment mode (DCAM). Fine tune the edge convergence
as necessary. To exit, press PIP CH again.
13) When convergence is acceptable, press PIP MODE to write data to ROM memory. ROM WRITE? is displayed
to alarm system that ROM will be overwritten with new data. Press the PIP MODE button again to write
displayed data to ROM.
14) DATA WRITE TO ROM will take approximately 4 seconds and no picture will be displayed.
15) Green dots will be displayed when operation is completed.
WARNING: YOU MUST DO THE FOLLOWING STEPS TO COMPLETE MAGIC FOCUS
INITIALIZATION!!! THERE HAVE BEEN MANY POSTS THAT PEOPLE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS
WITHOUT DOING THIS STEP BECAUSE THEY LOOSE MAGIC FOCUS!
16) Press MUTE to return to convergence pattern, then confirm again convergence is acceptable.
17) Press PIP MODE and then PIP CH to initialize Magic Focus. The initialize operation starts and several
windows appear during this operation. It takes about 30 seconds or less.
18 ) When green dots appear, initialize operation is finished.
19) Turn power OFF.
21) Wait a few seconds. Turn the TV on, and you should have your normal signal. Press Magic Focus button just
to make sure the magic focus still works (and that you did the last few steps properly)

End:
